Look who's 50 too…

Helvetica is not the only one turning 50 this year. CBS’ Sunday Morning marked the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Symbol this week. Originally designed by Gerald Holtom for the British group Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), the symbol is based upon Naval sign language for the letters ‘N’ and ‘D’. It’s use by a wide variety of people, from U.S. troops to Lucky Strike cigarettes, for a variety of causes speaks to the power of simplicity in the design (as well as Holtom’s decision not to copyright the symbol).

To learn more about it’s history read the transcript from CBS here as well as this article by the BBC.
