Words and Visuals, Born

One of the many many things that is cool about being a writer who works with designers is seeing the interaction that often happens between text and design. I’ve always been interested in the visual quality of words, how linguistic and visual languages inform and sculpt each other, and how the brain responds to both.
Additionally, [...]

Hatch Show Print

Recently, I organized a letterpress workshop for AIGA with Jim Sherraden and Brad Vetter from Hatch Show Print. If you’ve never heard of Hatch Show Print before, I’m sure you’ve seen their work at some point in your life. Hatch is an old fashioned letterpress shop in Nashville, TN that has been in existence since [...]

Robert Rauschenberg, American Artist, Dies at 82

Robert Rauschenberg has been a huge influence and inspiration in my life/art/design. I just found out that he passed away last month. He is one of those people I would want to have at my table if I could invite any 10 people over.
I thought this was a nice excerpt from the NYT article. It [...]

Recreating classic photos with Legos

These photographs from Mike Stimpson are fantastic. He’s a photographer who does a lot of macro shots of scenes that are setup using Legos. In this particular set, he’s recreated a selection of classic and historic photographs. Check out the gallery. Each photograph also includes information on how he recreated the photos, including what equipment [...]

Kapoor Tour

I attended the Anish Kapoor opening last night at the ICA which I have to recommend highly. Kapoor is an Indian-born British installation artist whose work stretches the spacial and perceptive boundaries. I was smiling the whole time.

I always wonder, however, how one sets up a show such as this. So many of Kapoor’s pieces [...]

On the wall

This animation by BluBlu is pretty amazing. I have tons of questions about the process of making something at this scale but maybe it’s better appreciated without knowing how it was done. Like an artsy magic trick.

These are no ordinary wallflowers!

What do kitchy kitchens and blooming bathrooms have in common? Here is a series of vintage wallpaper patterns that have been inspired by everyone from Bugs bunny to Peter Max. The fishies pattern comes from my recent bathroom renovation care of 1935 or so!

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

I found this film while researching another post. Firstly, it is simply fascinating to watch the calligraphy of Dutch artist, typographer and designer, Job Wouters. But it is really fun watching his nephew try to replicate the painted letterforms.

Two websites (only two?!) have caught my eye this week.
The first is for Elbow, one of my favorite bands. I spend a fair amount of my life examining music marketing and I know for a fact that most bands Elbow’s size have much more starkly designed sites…if you’re lucky enough to get a site at [...]

Playhouse

“THE house is off-limits to children, and adults are asked to sign a waiver when they enter. The main concern is the concrete floor, which rises and falls like the surface of a vast, bumpy chocolate chip cookie.” Could you imagine such a place? Very colorful and graphic – takes me back to when I [...]
